Ready for 2017!

After my last post the whole house got sick!  BOO! But we got everything done and the kids had an amazing Christmas. It was quiet and simple and great.

Obviously 2016 was not all I'd hoped it would be. On the bright side, I'd like to think I'm stronger for it. And hopefully good things await in 2017!

1. What did you do in 2016 that you’d never done before?  I made my first strides toward becoming a published author

6. What would you like to have in 2017 that you didn’t have in 2016? I would like to be able to buy a bigger house that suits my growing family better! (same answer as the last three years). I'd also love it if the book was published

7. What dates from 2016 will be etched upon your memory, and why? May 7th (found out we were pregnant) and June 28 (found out he was gone)

8. What was your biggest achievement of this year? The house and the book.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?  Miscarriage and D&C

11. What was the best thing you bought? Didn't have the funds for much this year. I guess it was a good investment to work on the house. Hopefully, anyway.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of? Stressing out

27. What was your favorite film of 2016? The Martian

28. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 34.  I actually had the day off. I don't remember doing anything much, but it was nice and low key and I DIDN'T HAVE TO WORK!

29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? If there hadn't been quite so much to overcome.

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of 2016 ? I'm still loving leggings and boots, especially my Candian boots and the new brown ones my mom got me. And I got a pair of "jogger" sweats yesterday and I think they might be my new lounge go-to.

31. What kept you sane? My hubby, my kids, my mom, my sisters, my family, my friends, and my coworkers! Talking and writing and laughing and music!

The State of the Fair

Shew, we are feeling the heat in the midwest!  Or maybe it's just because I'm coming off a weekend of yard sale and State Fair?  Well, it's hot, regardless.  We did a 3 day yard sale and then the very next day we spent the entire day at the State Fair.  I learned my lesson, we were almost too tired to enjoy the fair this time around.  My feet hurt after about an hour.  Still, we had a good time, especially the kids, at least until AJ's naptime came around, then he MELTED DOWN big time, so we called it quits.

I'm feeling short on words today, so I will default to pictures! :)

Pony Rides! (I want to crop myself right out of these pics)

AJ is excited for his turn.  Daddy is excited watching Tyler ride, I think.

Ach, he's so big!

He LOVED it!  Grinned and chattered the whole time!

AJ running, free of the stroller for a moment

Farmer Tyler--This tractor had a TV screen inside that simulated the view from a real tractor, so cool!

Goofing around at lunchtime

This was a remote controlled robot-thing.  AJ was terrified of it.

Another type of horse!

AJ loved the train! Until it was over, anyway.

Staycation 2015

Thanks for the comments on my last post ladies!!  You're so sweet!

Last week, Adam and I took off work to spend some time with the kiddos (before Tyler goes back to school NEXT WEEK) and to accomplish a few things on the house.  The weather wasn't exactly cooperative (rainy, stormy at times and HOT) but we did manage to paint our bedroom (which included the walls, ceiling, and trim) and Tyler's room (just the walls). I feel pretty good about that, as I wanted to tackle two projects and that qualifies, although I would have liked to tackle something bigger that will be more of a challenge on a weekend.  We went with a warm tan/sandy color in our room and although I'd planned to do white in Tyler's room, he convinced me to let him pick a color (with guidance) and chose a light blue, which I ended up being happy with.  I was very sad to paint over his stamped paw prints, though!  It broke my heart a little bit! We did leave one behind, at his request, and I'll just paint it over before we move.  Oh, I did have a bit of an issue when we were taping off Tyler's room.  I was finishing taping the ceiling and had just one piece left to put up. I was trying to reach, using a three step step ladder.  As I was reaching, I thought "I'd better just get down and move over, or I'm going to fall.  So I started to get down. And the ladder tipped over and I fell.  Oops.  I actually cracked my head pretty hard on the door frame as I went down, which was a little scary.  Luckily, aside from a bad bump and a headache, I felt okay, not dizzy or anything.  I had put my hands out though, and the pinkie on my left hand got sore pretty quickly and swelled a bit.  I sat down for a few minutes to make sure I was okay, and then we went ahead and painted.  I felt fine, just a little sore and then a lot sore the last few days, pulled muscles and stuff. My head is still tender and muscles in my upper arms and neck are pretty sore.  My pinkie is still swollen, stiff, and aching, so I am wearing a little splint on it, which makes typing interesting. My backspace button is getting a workout!

Other than painting, I tried to take the kids to the park, but it was too muddy, so I let them play a few minutes at the indoor playground at chick fil a, but that was pretty awful--crowded and the lack of manners of the kids there made me crazy.  Instead, we took the kids to to Monkey Joe's on Friday, which of course they loved.  And they are still young enough that they are tired after about an hour, so that works for me!  Adam and mom both go auctions, so they spent some time on that.

Friday was our 11 year anniversary (can't believe that) so we planned to go out, but it was really storming and literally POURED for like 5 hours, so we stayed home and went out Saturday night instead.  We had dinner at Texas Roadhouse and then drove around for awhile, looking at houses for fun.  Then we got some fro yo at Orangeleaf (YUM).  After that we hemmed and hawed over what to do and ended up at Goodwill, where Adam found some awesome deals to sell on Ebay.  Then we stopped at Walmart to get a curtain rod for Tyler's room and got AJ some socks (I swear, he has dragon claws, he gets holes in all his socks) and got the kids some PJs.  We laughed at how dull the evening probably seemed, but we had a really good time anyway.

So there you have it, our staycation!  I leave you with pictures!

AJ got ahold of my phone. He also erased all my pictures. Thank goodness for auto back up!

This is what happens...

...When I don't have time to post!  Then I have so much and I don't even remember what I've shared and what I haven't and blah it'll probably turn into a very non-detailed bullet pointed update post.  Ah well, I won't feel caught up until I do it, so away we go!

  • There was a Staycation!  We went to the Zoo (it was fun, but cold), we took the kids to one of those inflatable bouncy places (it was fun, but I twisted my ankle), we rented a storage unit and starting the declutter the house project,  and Adam and I had a date night (we saw Insurgent.  I liked the book better, quite honestly)!  Photo evidence of fun:
Goofy boys!

Undersea Tyler!

Big Guy!

AJ goes WEE!
  • Easter happened!  Eggs were dyed and found!  The Easter Bunny went overboard on Easter Baskets!

Dying Easter Eggs

The Bunny has been here!

AJ Loves Paw Patrol!

Hunting for eggs with Daddy

Huzzah!

Easter side note: I gave Tyler a book of bible stories for Easter and decided it was the perfect day to read him the Easter story.  My sweet sensitive boy started to sob at the end, saying it was "Such a sad story"!  Wow did I feel like a bad mommy!  I should have started with something more upbeat, huh?
  • I went to Birmingham for work. It was a quick trip, three days. It was a good, but tiring trip. It's always nice to spend time with the other ladies that do the same tasks as me, and we all really enjoy one another's company.  The trip was fairly smooth, although my arrival in Birmingham was delayed about an hour and then we got lost trying to get to the restaurant we were going to!

Cool Picture in Chicago O'Hare

Me and Miss Nova
  •  Twin got us tickets to see Into the Woods in Bloomington on Friday, so we had ourselves a little mini-roadtrip!  It was great, we sang loudly, had dinner at Mother Bear's Pizza (DROOL), walked around the beautiful IU campus for awhile, and the play was excellent!
    DEEP DISH!

    Pretty

    These trees were SO gorgeous!

    Spring is here!

    Little brook/creek

    Twinsies!

  • We are officially trying to get projects done at home so we can possibly list the house this summer.  First up--New Bathroom Vanity!  Adam got a vanity cabinet for $100 at an auction and we got a stone top at the Habitat for Humanity REStore.  He already had the faucet from one of his auctions too.  His coworker, who is also a contractor, was supposed to come and help us, but texted that he was sick 15 minutes after he was supposed to show up (grr!) so we decided to press on by ourselves.  Four trips to the hardware store, a stubborn, crumbling pipe, a stubborn water shut-off valve, and 8 hours later, we're pretty pleased with the results! (Still need to caulk the edges.) Still on the agenda is a new shower surround, pretty big overhaul of the downstairs bath, some flooring installation and a lot of painting!
Before, broken down white and green :-P

After!  A vast improvement!

World Traveller!

I'm a terrible blogger.  Blah blah excuses, busy, etc.  But I have A) a little free time and B) interesting things to blog about, so here I am!  I've actually got several posts in the works!  First of all, my trip to Canada!  Okay, so maybe I haven't traveled the world, but I did go out of the country for the first time last week!  Technically, I have been to the Bahamas, but since I didn't need a passport at the time, I don't really count that as outside the USA.  Anyway, I think I've mentioned that I have been covering the billing duties for our Canadian division for about the last 6 months or so.  Well, they had hired a permanent replacement, so they asked me to travel to Toronto, Ontario to train her for a few days.

First step, obtain passport!  I went to the local post office with my form filled out and got a passport photo and all that and sent it all in. Less than two weeks later, my passport arrived!

Unfortunately, they misspelled my name.  Too bad Melissa is spelled with 2 "s" instead of 3.  Back it went, and luckily it only took about a week to receive the corrected passport.  My bosses-boss, Anne, had decided to coordinate her own planned trip with mine so I wouldn't have to travel alone.  She would fly from St. Louis to Chicago and I would meet her there and we'd fly to Toronto together.  I booked my flights and hotel and prayed for good weather!

Well, as I'm sure anyone in the US can attest, we haven't really had that great of weather.  The east coast was getting pretty battered by snow on the Monday I was leaving.  It was snowing in Indy (not a ton, but still, snow) but the main problem was the my plane was coming from the east coast and it was delayed.  My planned layover in Chicago was only 43 minutes, which is tight not even considering weather.  I let Anne know I might not make the connection and I sat at the gate (freezing, by the way, breezeway doors opening all the time) watching the flight get later and later.  Finally, the flight that was supposed to arrive AFTER my flight left got bumped up on the screen. I went to the desk to make sure they hadn't moved us to another gate and the attendant told me there was another flight two gates over leaving for Chicago sooner than my flight, and she noticed that one seat had just opened up.

By this point, the flight from Chicago to Toronto had been delayed a little bit, giving me hope that I might make it.  We boarded the plane and were quickly de-iced and took off.  The plane landed in Chicago and I rushed off and to the nearest screen to see what gate I needed to get to. In a absolutely MIRACLE, my departure gate was just a few gates down from the arrival gate! They were already boarding, so I got right in line and within 5 minutes of exiting my flight from Indy, I got on the plane to Canada.  I passed Anne when I got on, who was surprised but relieved that I'd made it.  As I settled into my seat, I watched crews unloading baggage on a plane nearby and I thought to myself, "There is no way my suitcase is going to make this flight."

Spoiler alert: It didn't.

We got to Canada without incident and confirmed that my suitcase had in fact, NOT made the flight.  The airline assured me it would arrive around 6:30 pm and would be delivered to the hotel.  Anne and I went through interrogation customs and checked into our hotel, then had dinner. We even tried a Canadian staple called poutine--french fries with cheese curds and brown gravy.

Poutine--Not a big fan of gravy, but interesting!

When we got back to the hotel, I skyped with the family (on my phone, since my webcam was in my luggage), and then contacted the airline to check on my bag.  The plane it was on was delayed.  I checked again in an hour and the suitcase had arrived and was waiting for customs.  By the time I finally went to bed around 11:30, they still hadn't run it through customs.

I got up several times in the night to check the status.  I was half convinced I was going to have to wear my grimy airplane jeans and sweater and sneakers to work the next day.  Finally, at 5:00 am I called the front desk and HUZZAH my suitcase had arrived! I collected it and returned to my room, unpacked, ironed everything, showered (with MY shampoo!), and got dressed for the day (clean clothes!), and got ready (realizing I had left my full size hair brush at home, but hey, I had a flat iron at least! And makeup!), Skyped Adam and the kids and off I went to breakfast and work.

The new hire is VERY Nice and the training went really well. After work, she and the rest of the department joined Anne and I for dinner.  I ordered a drink called a Miles Davis (all the drinks were named after jazz singers), which the waiter apologized for having spilled the mix all over himself while he made it.  Then minutes later, I put the cup down on the table--sidenote, the place was VERY dimly lit--right on the seam of two tables.  Well you guessed it, the seam of the two tables were VERY different and my drink tipped onto the table, sloshing a good portion of the contents in one of my Canadian coworker's Vodka Cranberry.  We all had a good laugh--and a replacement drink!

The restaurant was a little fancy for my usual taste, but the appetizers were great (although i did abstain from the escargot) and I chose a pesto Alfredo dish, which usually came with shrimp and chicken. I asked the waiter if I could get it without the proteins.  When he brought it out, the bowl had ONLY the chicken and shrimp in it.  Apparently he thought I'd said no CARBS.  Another great laugh from all before he brought me the pasta instead, which was EXCELLENT! Then he brought out one too many creme brulees, so I decided to try it.  Where had creme brulee been all my life? Seriously, YUM!!!

Found a warm spot at the hotel!  If you didn't know, it's a little cold in Canada!

We went back to the hotel for what I hoped was a good nights sleep.  That did not happen.  I went to sleep about 10:30, only to be ripped from my sleep at just before midnight.

By the FIRE ALARM.

Yeah, not kidding.  And I totally had about a full minute where I'd bolted out of bed but really had NO idea what was happening.  I'd grabbed my glasses and even my phone, but I was looking around trying to make sense of what was happening.  I kept smacking the alarm clock (I've had alarm clocks randomly go off in hotel rooms in the middle of the night before).  Finally, I went toward the door where I could tell the fire alarm was going off everywhere.  I threw on some clothes and shoes, grabbed my coat, phone, and room key (but not my PURSE!  With ID and passport!) and headed downstairs. I was on the top floor (5th) so I went down the back step. I thought I smelled smoke, but I didn't see anything obvious.  Once outside (in the COLD), we headed around to the front of the hotel and I looked back at the front entrance.  And saw a huge wall of water.  In a few minutes, the fire department arrived and I found Anne, so we took shelter in our rental car (thank goodness she'd thought to bring the keys).  After about an hour, people seemed to be going back inside, so we followed them.  Anne went back to her room, but I admit, I was SCARED!  Not knowing for sure what had happened, I knew I was NOT going to be able to go right back to bed.  I went back to my room and decided I didn't care that I'd be charged $.89 per minute, I called Adam.  He reminded me that we wouldn't have been allowed back inside if they weren't sure everything was fine.  When we hung up, I called the front desk, just for piece of mind, and was told that there was no fire, just a burst pipe in the lobby (which explains the wall of water).  Apparently the sprinkler system (and therefore the fire alarm system) sensed the drop in water pressure and triggered the alarms.  Fire might scare me, but a broken pipe doesn't, so I finally headed to bed around 1:30-2:00 am.

Wednesday was much more uneventful, just work and then a quieter dinner with Anne at an Italian place with amazing lasagna and sangria that had little gel bubble things in it (sort of like what's in bubble tea, I think?  Weird!).  Thursday we put in another full day and then checked into a hotel near the airport for the night.  Luckily Wednesday I slept pretty good, but I woke up early on Friday morning, excited to head home!  At the airport, I got some cool souveniers for the family (a solar moose bobble head for my mom, a big wheel bus for AJ, pens for Adam and Chell, rocks and a stuffed beaver for Tyler, a magnet for my travel collection, and a beaver keychain with a moving head for Angie) and then we were off.

Anne and I made it to Chicago and said our goodbyes. It was really nice to spend time with her one on one. We had some great conversations.  I told Adam it could have easily been awkward, traveling with a boss, but it really wasn't at all.  I grabbed a sandwich and hung out at my gate until my flight.

#airportart

We boarded pretty much on time, but it was snowing so we had to wait to be de-iced.  At first, they said it would be at least 30 minutes, but right after that, they said we'd been bumped up and would be departing soon!  About 30 minutes passed when I looked out my window and saw this:

To clarify, that is NOT our plane.
Yeah. That happened.  They de-iced the wrong plane.  I don't think that one was scheduled to go anywhere.  The pilot came on the speaker and admitted that there had been a mistake.  Awhile later, the trucks pulled up beside us....and then left again.  The pilot really seemed at a loss at that point.  I think his exact words were "I don't know what to tell you folks..."  About an hour and a half after we boarded the plane, we were finally de-iced and took off safely.

Home at last!!!  Home to these faces!

Anniversary Awesomeness!

Hubby and I got the opportunity to go on a little overnight trip for our tenth anniversary!  It was amazing and I'm so so grateful to my mom and my sister for offering to watch the kids so that we could go!  It was our first overnight together since way before AJ was born and the first time we've really gone out of town together since our honeymoon!

Be warned!  Picture overload!

Adam was scheduled off work on Friday, so I took a vacation day.  We left the house around 8 am and drove to Columbus, IN.

On our way!  So excited!

We stopped at a Goodwill store--Adam is an avid Ebay seller and he's always looking for deals on things he can resell. He found a few things and I found a cute Vera Bradley purse.  After we were done there, we continued on to Nashville, IN.  In Indiana, we don't really call it "Nashville" very often, probably because it's easy to confuse it with Nashville, TN.  We mostly just call in "Brown County" (Nashville, IN is in Brown County lol).  I'd been there a time or two with my parents when I was a kid.  It's basically just a tiny little town with lots of quaint little shops and B&Bs and a big state park.  It's quiet and everyone is super friendly.

Our first stop was a winery outside of town.  As I've mentioned before, I have tried some wines in the past but never really cared for them.  The Brown County Winery offered a good selection of sweet and semi-sweet wines, so Adam and I hoped we'd find something we liked.  We weren't disappointed!  The very first one we tried was great!  It was their Vista Red, a semi-sweet wine and their bestseller.  We tried a couple of others but we liked it the best, so we bought a bottle and a few glasses before heading back out.

A view of the road

Rocky!  No mountains in Indiana, but we've got some hills!

The best I could get of the amazing views

We decided to go on past Nashville to Bloomington for lunch.  A few of my friends and Twin have raved about a little pizza place there called Mother Bears, so we decided to try it.  It took forever to figure out where to park because all of these little businesses each have about 5-10 parking spaces and that's it. Each business has signs that says their spaces are for their customer's only.   Of course, all of the spaces at Mother Bears were full.  We drove around for awhile, trying to find something, but everything was either reserved or was student parking for Indiana University, which is right across the street.  Finally we gave up and parked at a photography studio that offered parking for $5 for non-customers.  The food was good.  The pizza didn't blow me away, but the cheese garlic bread was phenomenal and worth the trip on its own.

After lunch we went back into Nashville and found a place to park (paid parking, again) and we just walked from store to store.  They have a little bit of everything there, handmade items, jewelry, artwork, leather shops, and of course lots of food.  A former coworker of Adam's owns a shop there, so we stopped by and talked to him for awhile.  He gave us his recommendations for where to have dinner and breakfast on Saturday and I bought a really pretty butterfly necklace from him.  We eventually bought Tyler a fancy bug catching cup with a magnifier (my little explorer), an egg that hatches into a duck, and a pez dispenser, AJ a new Peek a Boo book, my mom several colored crystals, my sister a pair of striped toe socks (she loves them) and twin a cute little hedgehog made of seeds and twigs.  We also got some saltwater taffy, caramel corn, chocolate fudge (heaven) and a bag of the best German roasted almonds I've ever had.

The shop owner called these her "Happy Herd"! I wanted one!

This was so Adam's shirt, but they didn't have his size!

Yum, chocolate truffle!

Beautiful blown glass. I took this and then saw a sign saying no pictures. Oops.

Beautiful sculpture outside the visitor's center

So quaint

Every kind of taffy you could imagine

At around 3:00, we headed to our hotel to check in.  The lodge is run by an older couple who were really nice and welcoming.  We chatted with them for a few minutes and then went to check out our room.  It was a simple room, but the bed was covered in a cute quilt and had a nice frame and was comfy.

Pretty comfy bed

But the best part of the room was this:

Can I get a HOT TUB?!

As tempting as the hot tub was, we just changed our clothes for dinner and headed back out because we had appointment for MASSAGES!  Adam had never had one before, and he definitely enjoyed it.  I didn't know ahead of time, but they used hot stones during the massages!  I was surprised at first, but it was really nice, so relaxing.  After the massages, we walked a bit more and then went to a place called "Out of the Ordinary" for dinner.

Do not adjust your screen, there is really that much bacon on that BLT.  YUM!

After dinner, the shops were all getting ready to close, so we stopped in a few more and then ended up getting ice cream.

Cookies N Cream for Adam, Mint Chocolate Chip for me!

We shared our cones with a birdie!

Once everything had closed up, there wasn't much to do other than head back to the hotel.  We enjoyed the hot tub and drank the ENTIRE bottle of wine and even slept some ;-)

The next morning we woke up pretty early so we killed time playing Texas Hold 'Em with saltwater taffy as our chips!

Tasty betting
After that, we headed for the Artist Colony Inn.  Adam's friend Joe had said they had a great breakfast buffet, and he was right!  They had eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, oatmeal, fruit, pancakes and best of all, fried biscuits rolled in cinnamon sugar with apple butter.  SWOON!  Adam tried his first and then said "Did you get one of those biscuits?" I nodded and he said, super seriously, "Eat it!"  It was heavenly!

After breakfast we started wondering when the shops would open.  We hoped it would be by 9 am, so we wondered around a bit and ended up finding a yard sale!  I found a book for AJ and a coach wallet and Adam found a rare Super Nintendo game!  I also got a pretty glass bowl for my mom.  After 9, we realized the shops probably weren't going to open until 10, so we decided  to head to the State Park to go horseback riding.

So pretty

Horses!  Well, horse butts

My house, Cash

Adam, riding Bonnie

Not exactly a cowgirl, but I can handle a horse!

The one picture I chanced taking while riding. A little blurry!

We got to be on one of the first trail rides of the day.  I mounted a horse named Cash and was immediately told that he need a firm hand, that he like to be lazy and let horses pass him. He then proceeded to rub on the fence until he got his bridle off of his ear!  I got nervous then! I wasn't sure he wanted me to ride him!  But once we got on the trail, he was pretty well mannered and I only had to urge him on a few times!  Adam's horse and the horse in front of me kept grabbing snacks from the nearby trees!  I thought it would be an easy, flat trail, but no!  We went uphill and downhill and it was fun!  And a workout, my legs muscles were a little sore!

After the horses we stopped at the winery and bought another bottle of wine to take home (we really liked it!) and then we spent a few hours stopping at flea markets along the road.  Adam found some things to resell and he found a new wallet he liked.  I also found my mom some of the knives she loves and Tyler a Turtles Bounce-on ball (what do you call those things?  With the handle, that you sit on and bounce around) and some little geodes.

On the way home, we stopped out our favorite restaurant for dinner and made one last detour.

The park (garden) where we got married

10 years ago, we said "I do" in that very spot

Love that man

It's been a great 10 year!

When we started getting close to home I was antsy to see my boys!  We had a great time but I missed them too!  Someday (when I don't have to worry about strollers or toddlers breaking things) we'll take them to Nashville too!  It wasn't the Hawaii trip we had dreamed of, but I couldn't have imagined a nicer trip to celebrate 10 years together!
